Netscape Navigator Follow-up

Listener Maik wrote in about a joke Federico made on Connected Ep 12 about Netscape Navigator:

He told the audience to point their "Netscape Navigator" to the shownotes URL, so here's how this actually looks on Netscape Navigator 4.07, which has no idea what CSS is. I went into my cellar where my collection of old Unix machines sits, fired up the SGI Indigo2 running IRIX 6.5, made a few screenshots and exported the page to Postscript (and then converted that to PDF later). So, here you go :-)

It's amazing how far the Internet has come.

All Bets Are Off

The Bionic podcast on 5by5 started out life as a show about 'technology and media ecosystems', hosted by Matt Alexander and Myke Hurley.

However at Episode 51, things took a bit of a turn. After this point Matt and Myke let everything go and started to create a show they seemed destined to make.

Bionic became a podcast with a devoted audience of people who helped create some rather peculiar things, that all added up to something rather beloved.

However, as Matt's business grew and Myke started to work on new plans of his own, it became harder to make time for the show. So it therefore came to an end.

However, Matt and Myke missed each other too much. So they're back!

Bonanza! will be a (most likely) monthly cavalcade of incredible-ness from your favourite British podcast duo.

The first episode will be recorded live on November 4th after Matt joins Myke on Inquisitive. The show will be available to download afterwards.

Get your special trousers ready. It's time to tear them away.

Introducing two new podcasts by Jason Snell

One of the best parts of working in this industry is getting to know your heroes. Unlike NBA stars or musicians, most people in our corner of the Internet will reply to a Tweet or respond to an email, dispensing advice, support and more.

For me, Jason Snell is one of those guys. I have enjoyed his podcasting for years, and have read his articles for Macworld for even longer.

Today, Jason announced that he's leaving IDG after 17 years of service. In addition to his work on The Incomparable, Jason is launching two technology shows, right here on Relay FM.

Clockwise (moving to Relay FM from IDG) is a 30-minute panel show covering the week's top topics. Upgrade is a new podcast in which Jason will look at Apple, Amazon, Google and more through the lens of his years of experience covering technology.

Jason's one of the nicest people around, and Myke and I were honored when he proposed the arrangement, and we couldn't be happier to bring these two shows to the network.

Hey there, iOS

I was poking around in our Google Analytics account today and noticed this little bit of data:

I guess this shouldn't be a huge surprise. Relay FM is pretty Apple-focused at the moment, and podcasts are more and more mobile. iOS users have a wide array of great apps at their fingertips to download shows on the go.

Clearly, that's bleeding over to our site as well. If you're curious, Linux was 1.01% of our total traffic to date, with Windows Phone clocking in at 0.20%, followed by Chrome OS at 0.14%

With a little help from our friends

Ringo Starr once sang:

What would you think if I sang out of tune; Would you stand up and walk out on me? Lend me your ears and I'll sing you a song And I'll try not to sing out of key.

I get by with a little help from my friends; I get high with a little help from my friends; Going to try with a little help from my friends.

While neither of us are drug users (pinky-promise), we wouldn't be here today, launching our new network, without the help of a ton of awesome people.

I'd like to start with our better halves. Without the ladies in our lives putting up with our late nights, allowing us to spend a chunk of money and listening to us bicker about where to put commas in show descriptions, Relay FM would still be just a dream.

Then there's Tim Smith and Will Duffy, whose hours of hard work made our website awesome, despite endless design tweaks and functionality changes. While short-lived, Nathanael Smith's landing page served a vital role in our launch.

Frank Towers provided Relay's look and feel. The logo and artwork all sit on top of a grid developed just for us, giving it all a Jony Ive-level of fanciness. We've got the most handsome artwork in your podcast app, thanks to Frank.

Over the past few months, we've asked a ton of people for help and advice. To Jason, Marco, Merlin, Shawn, Casey, Matthew, Dan and Tom: your willingness to take time to answer questions and field our ideas was seemingly unending. Thank you for your patience and wisdom. Myke would also like to thank Marco, Russell Ivanovic, Underscore and Oisin Prendiville for convincing him the RSS feeds were okay. We'd also like to thank these and other developers (and the awesome people at Apple) for featuring us today:

Relay FM featured in third-party apps.

Relay FM in iTunes

As our Advisor of Special Business, Federico Viticci, has been involved since Day One, and has helped shape Relay FM into what it is today.

We'd like to especially thank Mr. Dan Benjamin. Dan took a chance on us two years ago. Being on 5by5 was a dream come true, and through the process of leaving and starting Relay, he has been nothing but supportive and helpful.

Most importantly, we'd like to thank you, our listeners. We've been making shows for a long time, and many of you remember the 70Decibels days. We are only as successful as you let us be, and your support is deeply humbling.

Love, Myke and Stephen
